ADSC - We're Hot
Dear fellow sailors,
Yesterday, as a number of us were sweating profusely after rigging our boats and recovering in the air conditioned sail loft, I realised that the Abu Dhabi Sailing Club can claim yet another superlative. We are the hottest sailing club in the world!
Now we haven't done any statistical analysis on this claim, but we do sail 365 days a year in one of the world's hottest climates and on the warmest body of water. So if some other club were to contest the title, we can challenge them to a home and home racing series, to be held in August.
As befits the world's hottest club, we're entering the autumn season with lots of excitement. Our very own Blake Redding has taken on leadership of the sailing academy, with adult sailing courses already started and kids classes starting in a week. As an added element of the youth program, Antoine Victor is organizing a racing team that will participate in UAE regattas.
On top of the sailing, Blake, Peter Falck, Karissa Lewes, and Paul-Henri Leruth are also teaching RYA 2 power boat courses. With Abu Dhabi starting to require licenses to operate power boats, this program promises to be an active one for the rest of this year and beyond. These courses have the added benefit of providing an additional revenue stream for the ADSC.
Our adult members are turning up to sail in all weather. For the Autumn 1&2 races yesterday, sailed in 10-12 knot breezes, we had seven double handlers and six single handers on the water. Everyone stayed for a drink and 17 of us had dinner together in the Pub. Over the Eid weekend there was no race, but Joan Grant organized well-attended social sails around Center Island on both Friday and Sunday.
Membership continues to be stable, with a number of new members joining to offset those moving on. Among those departing is Karl Sees, who has served so well as our Social Officer on the ADSC committee. Before his departure, Karl won a couple of monthly mug trophies, racing in the RS 400, so he has ADSC hardware to display in his new home. With Karl's departure, we are fortunate that Paula Peacock will take on the Social Officer responsibilities. Many thanks to Paula... and Karl, please come back for a guest sail whenever you can.
I'm looking forward to some fine sailing in the next few months and hope to see all of you on the water or around the Club. Remember, this club is the hottest!
All the best,
